RE: Questions about 2005 Excursion

The reasoning for not upgrading the 2005 X the way the superduty was upgraded was simple. It was being discontinued and they just used up the old parts and made the vehicle until they ran out "stuff".
I liked my 2000 so much that I wanted to order one of the last 20005 models made. My new 2005 was made in August 2005 and some extras were not available when I ordered mine because they ran out of parts and did not order more for a discontinued truck.

Hurricane Damage Report - Victoria Palms - Donna, TX

This information comes to me from a current resident of a mobile home in Victoria Palms.
No real flooding took place. All buildings are intact
There was nobdy who was injured.
No trees were uprooted, however, there is palm bark and palm fronds everywhere.
Mobile home skirting was loosened from many homes and is askew.
A few homes lost roof shingles and many carports suffered damage.
Steve's corner was not checked by this person, nor was the lot across from it.
After the storm only a small portion of Margaret St had power. According to my source these folks get their power from Weslaco. The rest of the park has no power. It is very hot and humid and after two days without AC these folks left and are now in San Antonio. Nobody really knows when the power will come back on. AEP, the electric delivery company for part of the area, stated that there were 160,000 customers without power yesterday.
NO refrigeration, AC, Gas, street lights, traffic signals, etc. NOT the place to be right now.

RE: Questions about 2005 Excursion

I have owned a 2000 and now own a 2005. The 2005 DID NOT get the 3 valve head motor. Both my X's are almost identical. The rear sway bar (std on 2005) did nothing to improve towing. That said, I think the X is the best towing SUV ever made.

RE: where to go from Mexico

Head for the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The towns of Mission, McAllen and Harlingen are close together and connected by Expressway 83. There are a number of dealers on the service road that parallels the highway. This areas has hundreds of rv parks so a check of the local newspapers will probably list for sale by owner units.

RE: Rookie wanabe snowbirds

As an American who has been to the Rock let me try and help by giving you some general information. The popular places are deep south Texas, central and south Florida and southwest Arizona. All will keep you much warmer than a gallon of Screetch consumed in your local Corner Brook Pub.
You mentioned price so I will give you my opinion that Texas RV parks are the least costly based on comparable amenities, however, Florida is closer for you.
The State of Florida has about 800 RV Parks. Deep South Texas (primarily the Rio Grande Valley) has about 500 RV Parks. You may want to save Arizona for a time when fuel is less costly. Even if you don't consider Arizona, this means lots of choices. A top flight Florida RV park will be well over $1000 a month. An equivalent RV park in Texas will run around $650.
So.......... how much do you want to spend and what type of park interests you the most?
I have been to all the places mentioned and more. For me..... my choice is Texas and I have met a number of Newfies at my RV Park. One of them even purchased a permanent winter home and keeps his Mustang convertible and Harley permanently moored in south Texas.

RE: Finding a Snowbird perch

Listed below are weather statistics for N Fort Myers, FL and McAllen, TX. Also listed is Orlando in central FL. The highest concentation of RV parks in Florida is in the center of the state. If you look at the average temp listing you will see that the difference between central Florida and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas is one or two degrees in the winter months.
It is also interesting that the RGV of Texas has about 500 RV Parks and the entire state of Florida has about 800.

RE: My GM cuts the brake juice when feathering...

YES...get rid of your time based controller. The more you know how poorly they work, the faster you will want to get rid of it. You will be able to feather the brakes with a P3 for as long as you want.

14 is the easier route. Make sure you stop at the rest area in Shell Falls and take the very short walk to the waterfall.

RE: Bugs in south Texas?

"Bugs" are not bad at all for a number of reasons, however, location does have some effect here. The closer you are to water and trees the more you will see.
Things that reduce bugs in the valley.
It is dry here.......... not desert, but the place does not get a lot of rain.
It is breezy/windy on many days and what bugs there are blow away.
Much of the valley is urban which reduces places for them to breed.
There is almost no open standing water.

RE: Reno, NV to Glacier Nat Park, MT

Thank you all. Based on what you have told me and my likes and dislikes in RV travel, I think I have come up with a route that will work for me and provide camping locations that are acceptable.
1 I-80 East to Winnemucca, NV
2 US-95 North to
3 SR-13 in Grangeville, ID to
4 US-12 to
5 US-93 to Glacier Nat Pk, MT
From Grangeville, ID to Missoula is 175 miles with almost nothing shown on the map in the way of towns. Where can a 55 foot long Rig get gas on this route?
The same question applies to the southern section of my route from Winnemucca, NV to the Caldwell, ID area which is 235 miles long.
I know that there are gas stations but pump access with my rig is the big question.

RE: Reno, NV to Glacier Nat Park, MT

My map shows just a few passes with elevations. Lolo pass is listed at 5300 feet. Is that the highest I will be? I was thinking that some of the passes would be 9 or 10 thousand. I have towed as high as 12 thousand but would prefer not to go any where near that with my current rig.

RE: Reno, NV to Glacier Nat Park, MT

Thank you for your answers so far. Based on what has been stated US-93 is very doable but US-95 would be more of what I am looking for.
I do have a question regarding using US-95 to I-90. That route will have me cross the Bitteroot Mountains on Interstate 90 as opposed to traveling east on Interstate 80 or US-2.
Is I-90 a route that has lower percent grades and less elevation than US-2?
Do you know the highest elevation on I-90 I will encounter?
Do you know the highest elevation I will encounter on US-95?
I have a tow vehicle with a gas motor so elevation and grade is a real killer for me.

You can figure about $3.50 for a car and double that if you are towing a trailer. The Parkway is about 176 miles long from Cape May to its end at I-287 in NY.

RE: new york state binghamton to NYC - help

The shortest, cheapest and most scenic route is 81 to 17. The only negative about 17 is it is very hilly in parts but 84 is the same or worse and is longer.
The Thruway is expensive, longer, but mostly flat.
My vote is 81 to 17 to Thruway to Tappan Zee Bridge

Reno, NV to Glacier Nat Park, MT

In August I will leave my NJ home to attend an Army reunion in Reno and then travel by RV to Glacier National Park. NJ to Reno is easy, take I-80 all the way.
Reno to Glacier is a different story. It looks like I have three choices, I-80 to either US-95, US 93, or I-15.
I am interested in finding a road that will have the least amount of steep grades and high elevation travel. By looking at a map it looks like US-93 is the shortest, but is it the best route to the west side of Glacier NP?
